Sir Henry Morgan

Monnington Lodge is a Public House with Restaurant and Accommodation, which began life back in the 16th Century as a farm built and owned by the infamous Morgan family, Thomas Morgan was a colonel in the Civil War and uncle to Sir Captain Henry Morgan, once governor of Jamaica.

The infamous pirate Captain Morgan (1635 - 1688), Who gave his name to a brand of rum was born in Abergavenny, and reputedly owned and lived in what is now the Penllwyn Manor, Pontllanfraith.

Morgan was kidnapped by buccaneers in Bristol, he was then shipped to Barbados. There he joined his captors and conducted unbridled, triumphant expeditions against Spanish territory.
He later gained respectability in 1674 as Sir Henry Morgan, deputy Governor of Jamaica.)

The à la carte menu changes monthly, but typical starters include Grilled Mackerel served on a bed of roquet salad with beetroot dressing, Deep Fried Brie with a cranberry sauce and the Salmon and Dill Fishcakes with tomato and red onion are exceptional.  A Taster of the main courses include Tournedos Rossini, Chicken Supreme stuffed with caramelized onions and roasted peppers, Pork tenderloin with onion mash and cider sauce.  All of which are typical of the inspired combinations our chef conjures up.
